School Workshops for Whalley Range Primary

Primary schools in Whalley Range enjoyed workshops provided by Celebrate artists and poets and a local school workshops Friend's Group to create work to display at this year's school festival

The Friends of St Margaret’s Primary school ran workshop activities related to potatoes - to showcase at Celebrate this year, funded by Manchester City Council

Activities included

  • practical outdoor sessions planting potatoes, and work with Forest Schools
  • History workshops about potato growing in Whalley Range,
  •  Tithe maps - work with Tangmere Court residents,
  •  History of Irish connection to potatoes - feast and potato famine,
  •  water + waste, dandelion and burdock,
  •  History workshop - Irish population and migration in Whalley Range 

Art work included

  • potato prints/repeat patterns on paper,
  • canvas bag decorating/potato prints on  canvas banner,
  • starch resist canvas squares/bags

    Potato recipes included potato pakora cooked at the festival – along with delicious and healthy Potato and Nettle soup to keep out the cold!

    The group took photographs of the activities for display at the festival and for future calendar pages.
