Mitel Purohit is an experienced Indian percussion workshop leader in London schools, and currently one the most sought after Indian percussionists in the UK. The tabla is a popular Indian percussion instrument used in Hindustani classical music and in popular and devotional music across the Indian subcontinent. The instrument consists of a pair of hand drums of contrasting sizes and timbres.

Like any percussion instrument it lends itself to group work and the playing technique can be developed from a simple finger tap right through to extensive use of the fingers and palms in various configurations to create a wide variety of intricate sounds. The heel of the hand is used to apply pressure or in a sliding motion on the larger drum so that the pitch is changed during the sound's decay.

Tabla workshops provide an exhilarating learning experience that will help your pupils appreciate Indian culture while experiencing traditional Asian drumming rhythms and percussion based music. Pupils will benefit from expert instruction and fully participate in a rousing and collaborative group experience. Workshops can be half day or full day and held as one-off events or regularly throughout the term. Workshops are ideal for large or small groups of any ability level and all equipment is provided.
