The magic of the Ancient Egyptian’s has fascinated and captured people’s imagination for hundreds of years. Introduce you pupils to this fascinating world through the eyes of an Egyptologist, who also takes them on a journey through Egyptian life and the mysteries of mummification and the Book of the Dead.
In the morning, Egyptian life and culture is explored through a range of educational activities, including Ancient Egyptian games, Maths and high quality genuine and reproduction artefacts with Mark the Egyptologist.

For the afternoon session, Mark transforms into Imhophet, the high priest, to re-enact the death of a Pharaoh, showing the mummification process and burial rituals, followed by the crowning of the new Pharaoh. Imhotep leads the complex mummification and wrapping process with the children’s help, ending with the burial in a magnificent full size sarcophagus.

Our workshop leaders are all experienced re-enactors, amateur archaeologists, historians, authors and teachers. All workshops are based on current archaeological evidence and historical fact.
Our aim is to inspire children and stimulate them to do further research and encourage a life-long interest in this fascinating subject.
The Portals to the Past team have appeared in the BBC’s “Horrible Histories”, many historical documentaries, feature films and regularly entertain audiences at museums and historical sites around the country.
