New eco centre offers education workshops to primary schools
Published on 22-09-2011 08:18PMThe grand opening of the Eco Centre at Sir William Robertson High School has meant more school workshops for local primary schools. A NEW learning centre at the village secondary school is to be available to local primary schools to learn about the environment. Sir William Robertson High School in Welbourn recently unveiled the new Eco Learning Centre and has extended an invitation to all its feeder schools to come and join them for the day to give the new facilities a try and enjoy workshops for schools
The school has re-equipped the science lab using a £7,000 Lottery grant, with which they have been able to buy items such as new microscopes, Netbooks to study temperatures and light levels. The aim is to open up the new resources to primary schools and tailor special eco-related workshops to their needs to enable children at the primary schools the chance to experience the new technology which they might not otherwise have.
As an example of the workshops they can, one school that has been studying plants was invited to the Eco Learning Centre to study plant cells under the new microscopes, while another compared Lincoln to London in a study of pollution. The workshop sessions are filmed and at the end of the day, the pupils are invited into the Sir William Robertson High School’s new Apple Mac suite to create a movie of their visit to take back to school and show their classmates what they have working on.
The new centre has low energy lighting and there is planning permission to install solar cells. Acting assistant headteacher at Sir William Robertson High, Seb Mann, said: “We welcome the opportunity for schools to approach us and ask if we can help them. We do our best to accommodate schools’ needs and hope to extend the net to all other schools in the area.”
