Scotland Street School Museum

Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Glasgow’s most celebrated architect, designed Scotland Street School between 1903 and 1906. The museum now tells the story of education in Scotland from 1872 to the late twentieth century. In our interactive workshops children can find out what school was like in the past, and also learn about architecture and building.

WEE ARCHITECTS, WEE BUILDERS

Early Level, Pre-5s

Children will look at Scotland Street School Museum and learn about how buildings are made. They will also discover more about building tools, look at pictures, hear stories and take part in hands-on activities such as mixing cement.

WEE ARCHITECTS, WEE BUILDERS

Early Level, Primary 1

A tour of Scotland Street School Museum will give children the chance to see some of Mackintosh’s architecture. They will then look at tools and pictures of buildings in construction, and take part in storytelling and hands-on activities such as mixing cement.

SMALL SUPER SCIENTISTS

Early Level, Primary 1

Children will have great fun learning how amazing science is! This lively interactive workshop uses experiments to find out about water and its properties. Promoting the Curriculum for Excellence, the session challenges and encourages successful learning for the future.

TOYS

Early Level, Primary 1

When visiting our period classrooms, children will imagine what it was like being a pupil at Scotland Street School. This session will explore traditional playground games and compare old toys with those of today. Each child will have the opportunity to make a toy to take away or – depending on the weather – play a traditional game in our playground.

SPICK AND SPAN AND SPORTY

First Level, Primary 2–4

Bring your class to find out what children long ago did at school to keep healthy. Children will meet Mr or Mrs Shine, who helps get people fit! Fun activities in Scotland Street’s cookery room and drill hall.

WORLD WAR II / VICTORIAN

CLASSROOM RE-ENACTMENTS (FREE self led or £88 actor led)

Second Level, Primary 5–7

Costumes for all children, period objects and a scary teacher! Seating for up to 60 in the World War II sessions and 50 in the Victorian sessions (accompanying adults need to be included in the visitor numbers). Self-led groups will have the use of classrooms, costumes and teachers’ scripts.
