Explorer Dome

Explorer Dome is a portable planetarium visiting schools and colleges across the South West. Based in Bristol, we present exciting, interactive science shows for schools which complement the National Curriculum and aim to make science inspiring for all ages and abilities. Our talented team of highly-trained, enthusiastic presenters are all scientists in disciplines ranging from astrophysics to zoology. Two presenters come to you, keeping the school shows lively and interactive. Couple this with fun demonstrations and the awe-inspiring atmosphere of the Dome and you can see how Explorer Dome is the most respected science outreach programme in the UK bringing science alive to over 60,000 children every year.

“Extremely professional and knowledgeable staff covered curriculum-relevant areas with verve and excitement!” Hyde ParkJunior School, Plymouth

“Genuinely fantastic – better than a 6 week teaching block!” BickleighDown Primary School, Plymouth

Explorer Dome presents shows on a range of science topics – Space, Light, Forces, Sound, Environment and the Human Body, all within the magical atmosphere of the Dome. Our presentations are geared towards specific age groups, from Foundation and KS1 up to A-Level, adult education and teacher training events. We are also regular visitors to festivals, fairs, holiday play-schemes, cub scouts and brownies (not to mention the occasional party!).

What is required for a Dome visit? The Dome can be set up in any large room or hall with a smooth, clean floor area of 6x7 metres, a clear ceiling height of 3.5 metres and access to mains power points.

How do I plan a visit? The Dome accommodates up to 30 primary or 25 secondary-aged children/adults per show and shows last 40-50 minutes. On a normal day we can present up to 6 or 7 shows, although bear in mind that the Dome will be in the school hall during lunch. It is usually possible to have more than one type of show during the day, so classes working on different topics can often choose a show to suit their requirements. Certain times of the year book up many months in advance, so please see our website for a general guide to our availability.

How much will it cost? A visit for schools in and around Bristol costs £180 for the first two shows, then £80 per additional show (plus VAT). For schools further afield, we may have to charge for a minimum of three shows – please enquire for further details.

Chemistry Shows – We also have a range of Chemistry shows suitable for all Key Stages. These do not take place in the Dome, so only require a room or laboratory large enough for your audience and a demonstration area. Topics include: ‘The Bubble Show’, ‘States of Matter’ and ‘Science Tricks’. See our website for further details.
