The Tropical Zoo attracts thousands of visitors each year, who enjoy the permanent exhibition of animals from every tropical region on earth. By combining fun and education, they aim to spread the message of conservation to a wider audience. Many of their animals are rescued from the illegal pet trade, private collectors or zoos, where their specific needs could not be met. The Tropical Zoo provides a safe haven for rescued and endangered animals and work hard to maintain an ideal environment for each species.
People are becoming aware of the importance of the rainforest to our survival in the developed world. The forests breathe life into our world, shielding us from the worst effects of global warming. They provide the plant life that forms the basis of research into drugs to prevent or cure many serious illnesses. The rich diversity of life from the forest floor to the tallest canopy is dependent on our commitment to conservation now and in the future.
The Tropical Zoo is a permanent exhibition of exotic animals and a centre for rescued and endangered species. Animal Encounters form an important part of the school trip experience and every effort is made to ensure that every visitor meets an exotic animal - close up! School trips engage the next generation of conservation minded youngsters and motivates them to learn by stimulating their imagination and arousing curiosity through physical interaction with the subject. With a blend of interactive, hands-on experience, they have so much fun that work becomes play.
Schools receive an exclusive package including a half hour talk with hands-on encounters with animals in a purpose built lecture theatre. There are four talks to choose from: Lifecycles, Mini-Beasts, Conservation, and Rainforest. The animals used for handling include Snakes, Lizards, Mini-Beasts, Owls, Frogs and Baby Crocodiles. Different talks involve different animals. The Schools Education Pack contains teachers’ notes and a workbook for children with lots of interesting exercises.
Children also enjoy exploring the exhibition, which includes displays of Marmosets, Birds, Fish, Reptiles and Amphibians, where they can feed the fish and the tortoises. There are also Pond Dipping and Picnic Areas.
If transport is a problem, you can arrange a Roadshow, when The Tropical Zoo can come to your school. An experienced handler will encourage the children to touch the animals under safe supervision. They bring the creatures to you and explain their habits and environment to your group. The Roadshow is tailored to the age and curriculum requirements of your group and if you wish to discuss your requirements in advance The Tropical Zoo team can ensure the children enjoy an exciting, interactive learning experience to satisfy your needs. All Animal Encounters are supervised to ensure your safety and minimise any stress to the animals.
