“The students have a greater understanding of character motivation and themes. It was a brilliant and fantastic performance that really brought the text to life.” Dagenham Park School

Based in the East London borough of Havering, the Queen’s Theatre is home to cut to the chase… the country’s only resident ensemble of actor-musicians. Every year the Theatre presents a varied programme of Shakespeare, classic drama, comedies, musicals, thrillers, new writing and the fun-filled festive pantomime, which is regarded as one of the best in the region. There are excellent school group discounts, including the Quids In rate of just £5 per pupil at certain shows. Visit www.queenstheatre. co.uk for information and to find out what’s on.

Touring theatre to schools

Look out for two theatre-in-education tours every year exploring a range of texts and social issues. Recent primary tours include The Hare and The Tortoise and The Ugly Duckling. Recent secondary tours include Of Mice and Men and Forever, which addressed issues surrounding teenage pregnancy.

Workshops

Most workshops can all be tailor made to suit your needs. See website for more details and a full list of available workshops.

Primary workshops include fun explorations of The Gruffalo and Where the Wild Things Are. For an introduction to Shakespeare, practical drama games are used to look at Romeo and Juliet or A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the popular Pantomime Workshop gives children the chance to dress up and perform their own version of panto.

Secondary workshops include Active Shakespeare, perfect for exploring the language, characters, themes and plots of Shakespeare’s plays. Devising is an opportunity to discover ways of creating drama from stimuli, linking to GCSE Unit 1. Exploring Set Texts brings English set texts such as Of Mice and Men, Pride and Prejudice and Death of a Salesman alive in the classroom. The 10 Week Intensive Performance Project is a unique chance to work with a professional director and perform on the Queen’s stage. To delve into any area in depth with a theatre professional,

Drama Enrichment Days for all ages can cover anything from acting skills and stage combat to costume, mask making and technical theatre. Short and long term Drama Residency Programmes can be tailor made for all age groups and are ideal for after-school clubs or a Gifted and Talented Programme.
