These popular workshops encourage reading for pleasure and concentration, teach art skills and develop the imagination. The age range is from reception to teen, and the sessions are suitable for children with learning difficulties. 

Comics Workshops (up to 30 children)

  • Themes: Create Your Own Hero, Myths and Legends, Ancient Greece/Egypt/Rome, Kings & Queens, Tudors, Stone Age, Aesop’s Fables, Chinese New Year, Dragons, Fairy Tales, Beano, Diary and World Book Day.

  • We look at examples of comics and graphic novels.
  • The group learn to draw a character step-by-step following my example.
  • I take them through the fundamentals of character creation on a PowerPoint, then they create original characters.
  • After some brainstorming the group create comic strips.
  • I offer support, encouragement and tips throughout the session.

Comics Workshops (suitable for larger groups)

  • Using a PowerPoint presentation I show the children how I create characters, from rough sketch to finished artwork.
  • We look at a variety of graphic novels.
  • I take them through the fundamentals of character creation and they create original characters.
  • After more discussion we create comic strips.
  • I offer support, encouragement and tips throughout the session.

Picture Book Workshops (suitable for larger groups)

  • These can be based on a picture book the group are already studying.
  • Using a PowerPoint presentation I show the children how I create picture books, from storyboard to rough drawings to finished page.
  • We look at picture book examples to demonstrate simplicity of text and line, and fun use of the picture book format.
  • We brainstorm for ideas then create original characters.
  • After more discussion we create a picture book storyboard.
  • As an option the group can start work on a picture book with a pre-made template.
  • I offer support, encouragement and tips throughout the session.

What’s provided?

  • I come in half an hour early to set up. I provide books for inspiration, black fine line pens, HB pencils, rubbers and sharpeners.
  • I usually require PowerPoint facilities, a flipchart and plenty of A4 paper.
  • I run the workshop either alone or with some assistance from staff depending on numbers. I am CRB checked and registered with the DBS Update Service.
