With the introduction of compulsory language teaching in KS2 of Primary schools, it is essential that schools get their language teaching provision well-established this coming academic year if it's not already in place.

It will no longer be enough for a school to offer extra curricular clubs for French or Spanish, all children must receive quality language lessons and make substantial progress in the chosen language over the 4 years. This is welcome news for language enthusiasts who have waited a long time for this. Good teaching by specialists will enthuse children with a love of languages and provide a solid grounding.

About Barbara Gleave

Barbara Gleave's unique experience and qualifications make her the ideal partner to help Primary Schools introduce and embed French into their curriculum. Unlike many specialists in her field she is a PRIMARY school teacher who is familiar with primary ethos and pedagogy.  She was appointed an Advanced Skills teacher in Primary MFL in 2003 and worked with Liverpool LA to deliver MFL training to primary schools until 2009. She studied French for her degree, awarded at Versailles Palais des Congrès, and received extensive training in methodology including an immersion course in Primary French in Besançon.

Barbara worked closely with the MFL department of Hope University and accompanied the Primary Languages tutor to Normandy to assess English students teaching all subjects in French. She was one of only 50 national trainers selected to deliver regional training on ‘Implementing the Primary Languages Entitlement’ to advisers, lecturers,  headteachers, consultants and ASTs.  She keeps up to date with current policy and practice by daily interaction with experienced colleagues on forums and social media sites, by membership of Association of Language Learning, and by attending and presenting at local and national Primary Language events.
