The CRM Society supports education through our headquarters at The Mackintosh Church. Last September we launched our Schools Education Programme. Glasgow has a wide variety of choice for Mackintosh inspired school workshops, with 5 venues delivering over a 150 workshops to more than 4500 schools pupils in the 07/08 academic year.
Charles Rennie Mackintosh
Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) architect, designer and artist, is today celebrated internationally as one of the most significant talents of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His birthplace, Glasgow, is central to an understanding of his achievements for it is here that the most important of his surviving work is to be found, all of which is publicly accessible.
Victorian Toys and Play - Primary 1 – 3
Science & Technology, People in the Past, Toys and Play
Session Times: 10am - 11.30am and 1pm - 2.30pm
Pupils will compare and contrast toys of today with their Victorian counterparts. Pupils will be encouraged to explore making their own toys that create noise as well as developing a sense of self play, creativity and using recycled and everyday materials.
Design Detectives - Primary 4 – 7
Expressive Arts, People and Place
Session Times: 10am - 11.30am and 1pm - 2.30pm
Pupils work in teams to Investigative the design secrets of The Mackintosh Church and leam about Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Pupils will study building motifs and designs and use this research to create their own design using printing techniques.
Expressive Arts, Science & Technology and People In the Past
Session Times: 10am - 11.30am and 1pm - 2.30pm
Pupils will look at Chair design, how the Victorians used furniture in the home and public spaces through comparison; gaining an understanding of why function leads to form and design. Pupils will examine materials and also have the opportunity to construct their own Mackintosh chair.
Self-Led Visits
Teachers and classes are welcome to visit The Mackintosh Church and use our resources as part of a self-led tour. If you would like to bring a class on a self-led visit, please book in advance.

Session Times: 10am- 11.30am and 1pm- 2.30pm
Our Mackintosh Educators will come out to your school and deliver this workshop in your class.
Materials and mess are limited.
Pupils will:
- Learn about Charles Rennie Mackintosh
- Gain an understanding of design
- Work in teams to problem solve
- Create sketches for their own chair design
- Construct a Mackintosh style chair
General information
Workshops last no more than 1hour 30 minutes, if you would like extra visiting time built into your visit just ask.
We allocate time for toilet breaks and gift shop visits at the end of the workshop.
No more than 10 young people are permitted a visit to the gift shop at one time, due to space restrictions.
An area is available for children to store bags and coats during the visit, we would advise teachers make their own arrangements with regard to the security of money or valuables.
A packed lunch space is available upon request and subject to building operations.
Adults must stay with their group at all times, teachers and group leaders are responsible for the groups behaviour during the visit.
