Hi, I’m Tizzy and I run Black History Circle.
The Pop-Up Museum is the workshop I wish I could have booked when I was teaching in London primary schools. As the history subject lead, one of my favourite jobs was organising whole school engagement around Black History Month.
Black History Circle brings authentic African artefacts to your students. With our collection, students learn some of the history of Africa and its people through the extraordinary and yet simple things that they made. Every object tells a small part of a huge and diverse story.
Pop-Up Museum Workshop
Black History Circle provides hands-on artefact education to schools in South London, Surrey and the surrounding areas. The Pop-up Museum workshops showcase traditional objects from Africa. There are over fifty different items to be discovered including textiles, games, instruments, furniture and much more. Your students get the rare opportunity to touch, handle and learn from these historical treasures, all in the convenience of their school.
I have curated a range of modern era pieces that exemplify traditional African design. Though some artefacts are much older than others, they have all been crafted by African artisans using the same meticulous and sustainable methods that their ancestors practiced for hundreds and sometimes thousands of years. One or two replicas of world famous items are brought along too!
Students will gain an appreciation for early, ecological manufacturing and design that is sure to inspire many insightful questions. Black History Circle can provide the answers and equip you with the resources to continue the learning once we have packed away.
Following the handling session, I offer an accompanying Craft Circle workshop.
First, your class are introduced to two African crafts. The beautiful Mud-cloth tradition of Mali and the charming Adinkra iconography from Ghana. Then, your students get to share their own artistry through print making and pattern design. I bring everything needed to turn your class into a community of crafters.
Our Pop-up days are packed with hands-on exploration.
